PROTECTING YOUR LOVED ONES

| ......Many of you are starting to develop large collections of both built and unbuilt kits. This can
represent a large investment in money and time. What would happen if your home were damaged by
fire, or if the kits were stolen? Let's talk about some things you can do to protect your investment: |
1... Store the models in a safe place, i.e. away from furnaces, fireplaces, etc.
2... Keep a list of your collection (including values). This list should be in duplicate. One copy for you to work with and one copy to store in a safe place out of the home.
3... Take some pictures or videos of your collection. If your models were lost in a fire, this list and or photos would be the only evidence you could use to support your claim with your insurance company. Most times they will not believe we have that many models. One thing that is difficult with plastic models is the heat alone will destroy them. If you do have a loss, be sure to keep the evidence until the insurance company has settled with you.
4... You should notify your insurance agent that you have a model collection. Ask to have the information entered into your file. He may want to help you discuss coverage and amounts. It should not cost one cent to do this; the models should be covered under the personal property section of your policy, in most cases.
5... Make sure that you have a Homeowner's Policy, or if you rent , make sure you have a Renter's Policy. Your policy will have a deductible. In most cases it will be $250.00, make sure you understand how this works.
6... If you have a very large collection, you may need to have your agent increase your coverage. This can be done at very little cost.
7... Don't tell everyone in town about your large collection. You never know where it may lead. I have personally had models stolen, so I know it can happen.
8... Don't talk about collections of other members in the club, etc. Why cause them grief?
9... Store your models on good shelves. They should be spaced close enough together so that the weight of the models will not cause crushing.
10... Store them so that you have access to any one kit without making a mess of everthing.
11... By all means keep them away from moisture or sunlight. If you store them right under the upstairs toilet.....you may regret it. Same with the dishwasher, etc.
By using common sense you can enjoy your collection for a lifetime. If you have any questions, let me know.
